Jack Sawyer’s roommate first met at the University of Ohio, playing DE and QB, earning five-star prospect projections. They stayed together in a room for almost one semester, before Quinn transferred.
Ohio State Buckeyes DE Jack Sawyer and Texas Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers were roommates at Ohio State University.
The two friends, who first crossed paths and played for Ohio, collided in a dramatic Cotton Bowl showdown.
Jack and Quinns’ appearance in the Cotton Bowl, the College Football Playoff semifinal, raised talks about their relationship.
Following the game, they had humorous banter and even exchanged words. Despite the rivalry, the former roommates seem to hold no grudge for each other.
Buckeyes’ defensive end Jack turned in one of his career-best performances against the Longhorns.
On the other hand, despite Quinn Ewers’ strong season with a 13-2 record, he was forced a fumble. It eventually cost the Longhorns the game against Ohio.
Former Roommates Quinn Ewers And Jack Sawyer Met At The Cotton Bowl, Ending Texas Playoff Hopes!
Both Quinn Ewers and Jack Sawyer had a decent season with their teams until last night’s matchup.
The former roommates met once again in a staged conclusion to the Cotton Bowl on January 10, 2015.
The game ended with No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes winning by 28-14 against No. 3 Texas Longhorns.
The Ohio DE season stats include 23 solo tackles and 30 assists, 8.0 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, and 1 interception.
Comparatively, the athlete has better stats than last season. But Jack’s game-defining strip sack on Quinn Ewers changed his reputation once and for all.
Quinn wouldn’t forget the Cotton Bowl night, mainly because of his former roommate.
He had a significant season as the starting quarterback for Texas with 3,189 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and 11 inceptions.
The QB’s Quarterback Rating (QBR) in the 2024-2025 season is 76.1. This means that he performed at 76.1% of the total games this season.
However, his charm didn’t work on his former roommate, who forced a fumble and changed the game.
In the Cotton Bowl, Texas was trailing by seven points. It was when Sawyer performed a critical strip-sacking on Quinn Ewers. He knocked the ball loose just before his quarterback friend could release a pass.
After stripping the ball, he recovered it and sprinted almost 83 yards for a touchdown. The incident officially sealed Ohio State’s victory.
Later commentators reported that Jack made history by marking the longest fumble return in College Football Playoff history.

And it was more special, as all this drama happened with just over two minutes left in the game.
Focusing on their history, they became friends during Quinn Ewers’ brief time at Ohio in 2021.
He played just one semester as a QB before transferring to Texas; however, he built a strong relationship during that time.
They were five-star prospects for their college team in 2021 and could be big NFL names someday.
Their bond was also visible after the game. Media captured them exchanging a few words, with fun, with Ewers expressing disappointment.
During the press conference, Sawyer said,
We was walking off, and he said ‘screw you’ and started laughing,” Sawyer said. That’s my boy.
The DE further added,
“Obviously we were roommates when he was here. I got a lot of respect for him and the rest of the Texas team.”
