Longest Field Goal In The NFL History Since 1920s

In the NFL, the offensive team attempts to kick the football through the opponent’s goalpost. If the ball goes above the crossbar, the team scores.

Teams usually attempt the goal on fourth down when they get a loose end within a reasonable distance of goalposts.

The legal field goal scoring earns the team 3 crucial points. Over time, hundreds of field goals have been achieved.

While some have been in regular season games, some have come in crucial moments of the Super Bowl.

The longest record for the longest field goal in NFL history stays with Justin Tucker‘s for his 66-yard goal.

While the second longest is just a yard below the first, it is a rare milestone, as the sport is getting more competitive.

In Super Bowl history, Chiefs’ Harrison Butker holds the record for the longest-ever field goal, 57 yards.

These records might never fall. Now, here’s the list of the longest field goals in NFL history:

66 Yards – Justin Tucker, Baltimore Ravens (2021)

Justin Tucker, playing against the Detroit Lions on September 26, 2021, posted a historic 66-yard field goal.

At the very last moment of the game, he, with an iconic Crow Hop, launched the football to the Lions’ goalpost.

Longest Field Goal
Justin Tucker’s iconic Crow Hop-induced 66-yard-long field goal record remains unbeaten until now in 2025.

The goal was decisive for the Ravens, and they won 19-17 against the Lions. The ball even bounced off the crossbar before crossing the plane.

Detroit Lions were present during the making of history at the Ford Field stadium, but it, unfortunately, was against them.

Justin’s 2021 record remains unbeatable even after the end of the 2024-2025 season.

65 yards – Brandon Aubrey, Dallas Cowboys (2024)

The whooping 65-yard long field goal by Brandon Aubrey has a saddening story. Though he posted the goal, it was for a losing cause.

Brandon’s goal against the Baltimore Ravens is the longest field goal in a losing cause in the history of the NFL.

Longest Field Goal
Brandon has the record for scoring the longest field goal for a losing side.

Cowboys lost 25-28 at their home stadium, AT&T Stadium, on September 22, 2024.

ESPN reports suggest that Brandon Aubrey’s first-quarter goal had an elevation of almost 584 ft.

64 yards – Matt Prater, Denver Broncos (2013)

Denver Broncos played a 51-28 matchup against the Tennessee Titans on December 8, 2013.

On that very game, Matt recorded a 64-yard long field goal with a whooping 5,200 ft elevation.

Matt Prater’s goal came at the end of the first half of Sunday’s game in 2013.

Longest Field Goal
Matt was the previous record holder for the longest field goal of 64 yards before 2021.

He posted the historic goal on the Broncos’ primary tenant, Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Matt held the record for the longest field goal in the history of the NFL until 2021. Justin Tucker broke his record by 2 yards.

63 yards – Tied Among 7 Players

Tom Dempsey posted the 63-yard field goal for the New Orleans Saints against the Detroit Lions in 1970.

His kick turned decisive after the ball went for a field goal with time already expired and play ceased.

Jason Elam kicked a 5,200 ft elevated and 63-yard field goal for the Broncos on October 25, 1998.

Sebastian Janikowski, playing for the Oakland Raiders, posted a left-footed field goal on September 12, 2011.

Longest Field Goal
Seven players hold the current record for the fourth position, a 63-yard long field goal, the oldest record being from the 1970s.

49ers’ retired kicker Davis Akers, in 2012, hit a 63-yard long field goal at the end of the first half.

Graham Gano, the Scottish-American NFL player, became match winner for the Carolina Panthers in 2018.

He went for a last-minute goal, tried out a field goal, and kicked it inside the goalpost for 3 points. Panthers won 33-31 against the Giants.

Brett Maher (2019) and Joey Slye (2024) went for the goal at the end of the first half and got three points for their teams.

Other Iconic Field Goals Records

Unlike the top three longest-field goal records, multiple players have matched the unmatchable feat.

Similar to records for 63-yard long goals, 7 players have records for 62-yard goals, and 10 players for 61-yard goals.

The history of the long field goals traces back to the 1930s and ’40s when only 40% of attempts were successful.

However, in recent times almost 80% of field goals turn out to be productive, as power has become more relevant.

Unlike regular-season games, Playoffs and Super Bowls carry extra weight. Scoring a field goal in these games is even more challenging.

Despite the pressure, Panthers’ Graham Gano posted a 58-yard field goal in the 2018 wild-card game.

He has the longest field goal in the NFL playoff history. Pete Stoyanovich has the longest goal in NFL postseason history, set in 1991.
