Jerry Jones announced parting ways with head coach Mike McCarthy after the expiry of a five-year contract. The disappointing performance of the Dallas Cowboys under McCarthy has influenced the new hiring.
The Dallas Cowboys reached a situation where the team seeks a new head coach for the 2025 NFL season.
They no longer have ties with Mike McCarthy, and with a disappointing 7-10 season, his departure was sure.
On January 12, 2025, the team owner, Jerry Jones, publicly announced the situation of cutting ties with McCarthy.
Though the HC is undoubtedly ‘one of the best coaches’ in the NFL, people felt the need for a new direction.
Mike McCarthy served as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 2020 until January 2025. He finished his five-year tenure with 49 wins and 35 losses.
Moreover, Deion Sanders and Kellen Moore are some of the big names in the race to be the new HC for the Cowboys.
Dallas Cowboys on the Search for a Head Coach After Owners’ Announcement Of Not Continuing With Mike McCarthy!
Following the departure of Mike McCarthy, the Cowboys are eager to bring in a game changer head coach.
The main expectation for the man to come and lead will be to lead the team back to championship contention.
Dallas Cowboys are interested in signing an experienced person with a track record of success in similar conditions.
Moreover, the team showcased potential over the years as a strong offensive mindset. So, management could go after coaches with a history in offensive coaching roles.
On the other hand, Jason Garrett, a former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, recently shared some advice for the incoming coach on how to succeed with the team.
I asked Jason Garrett what type of coach could thrive in Dallas. His answer was terrific insight into how a coach can fit (and communicate) with the ownership structure.

Until the owners and board officially hire, we never know who will lead the team for seasons to come.
According to David Moore, the coach with no experience in coaching wouldn’t be the first choice for the Cowboys.
Moore stated,
I don’t think that’s his first choice. I think it is someone who has won in this league before.
Internal reports suggest that among many potential candidates, Deion Sanders, Kellen Moore, and Jason Witten are top-listed.
Despite the fact that two of them don’t have prior experience in coaching teams in the NFL, they still stand as top choices.
1. Deion Sanders Sr., HC Colorado Buffaloes
Deion Sanders stands as one of the top candidates for the head coaching position of the Dallas Cowboys.
Since he already has experience playing with the team from 1995 to 1999, he understands the team’s values.
As a coach, he has served as an HC at Jackson State University and the University of Colorado.
Though the transition from college football to NFL coaching won’t be easy, Sanders is easily the top contender.

Deion Sanders‘ key strengths include recruiting top talent and developing players both on and off the field.
Overall, he had a coaching record of 40 wins and 18 losses across five seasons with Jackson State and Colorado.
The potential Cowboys HC’s ability to turn around struggling programs has worked out for the teams he has coached.
While Sanders has no prior NFL coaching experience, he isn’t new to coaching in the American scenario.
The question still lies in whether or not Jerry Jones would prefer someone with no NFL coaching experience.
2. Kellen Moore, OC Philadelphia Eagles
Kellen Moore’s candidacy for the head coaching position of the Dallas Cowboys could be interesting.
Even his current role as an Offensive Coordinator with the Eagles resonates with the new Cowboys’ potential.
Having previously played for the team from 2015 to 2017 as a quarterback, it would be great if he returns.
He appeared in three games, starting two, and recorded 779 passing yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions.
Besides just playing, Moore has worked as a QB coach and OC on the team until 2022. He well understands the Cowboys’ current requirements as a coach.

Under his leadership, Dallas’ offense ranked among the best in the NFL, and it particularly brought the best out of Dak Prescott.
Alongside the Dallas Cowboys, he worked as an OC for the Chargers in 2023 and currently works with Philadelphia.
The odds of Jerry Jones hiring Kellen Moore as the Cowboy’s next Head Coach are still very high.
However, media reports suggest he might be the second top contender, just behind Deion Sanders.
3. Jason Witten, HC Liberty Christian School
Jason Witten, a former tight end for the Dallas Cowboys, is one of the top candidates for leading the Cowboys.
Before he entered coaching, his time on the team as a player for almost two decades, Jason is one of the greatest tight ends of all time for the Cowboys and the NFL.
In his distinguished 17-year NFL career, he played mainly for Dallas. Witten has experience with how the team’s internal things work.
With 1,228 receptions and 13,046 receiving yards in 255 games, he is a GOAT offensive player of all time.
After retiring in 2021, he began coaching Liberty Christian School in Texas.

Under Jason Witten, the team won back-to-back state championships in 2023 and 2024.
Despite not having any NFL coaching experience, his capability to lead has made him a contender for Dallas Cowboys HC.
Moreover, Witten’s deep understanding of Jerry Jones makes him ahead of all other coaches.
The Cowboys are currently seeking someone who can stand at their offensive plans, which Jason Witten has experience with.
Besides, there are other big names in the race, including Ben Johnson, Bill Belichick, Mike Zimmer, Pete Carroll, and many more.
The Cowboys’ coaching search is still ongoing and the team has made no official announcement yet.
